Description

Paws for Reading - Term 3 2017

Read to a furry friend!

Is your child shy or reluctant about reading? Do they need to gain confidence in reading aloud? Reading to a gentle and patient furry friend can help. Selwyn District Libraries are partnering with members of the Selwyn Dog Training Club to offer Paws for Reading. Book your child in to spend fifteen minutes reading to a friendly, carefully selected dog.

Can this help your child’s reading?

Similar programmes have been shown to improve reading fluency between 10 – 30% over time, however no results are guaranteed.

How to participate

Please bring a book that your child has read before or choose one from the library before the session. Most sessions will be on the mobile library bus.

Dogs have each been carefully selected and will be monitored by the dog’s owner/handler. A library staff member will also be on hand at all times during the session, however the sessions encourage children to read to the dog with minimal adult intervention.

IMPORTANT

Please do not book your child into a session if they are nervous or anxious around dogs.

Please do not book your child into a session if they have a known allergy to dogs.
